Poundland founder Steve Smith takes helicopter flight for date-night TV show

When Steve Smith, the multi-millionaire founder of Poundland, fancies popping out for a curry with his wife, he doesn't jump in a taxi or call a taxi like most of us would – he jets off by helicopter.

Willenhall-born Mr Smith and wife Tracey are seen popping out for a date night in their helicopter as they were being filmed by Channel 4 show How'd You Get So Rich?

The 54-year-old worked his way up from a stall in Bilston market to selling Poundland in 2002 for £50 million.

Mr Smith said: "I used to go to dad's stall at Bilston market from the age of two and learned about business and customers.

"On the stall we'd take things which had come out of the original packaging, throw them in a cardboard box and sell them for 10p. This box took more money than the rest of the stall."

Mrs Smith said on the show 'you don't forget where you've come from'.

His Shropshire mansion home has 13 bedrooms, a swimming pool, a pub, games room, and a grand piano.

He said on the show that it took him and his wife 12 months to find the house, before renovating it and doubling its size.

He owns 10 different businesses, a property portfolio and has helped fund more than 7,000 new start-ups. He has recently set up an online pound shop, securing a £2m cash injection.

Poundshop.com, which is based in Dudley, is set to expand operations after receiving funding from investment group Foresight.
