Walsall bakery: Plan for 80 homes at former Harvestime site

Controversial plans to build 80 homes on a former bakery site in Walsall are set to go ahead despite traffic concerns.

Gloucestershire-based developer Shiptinvest No.1 has applied to bring properties to the old Harvestime Bakery plot, in Hollyhedge Lane, which was Maple Leaf Bakery before that.

But the scheme prompted a petition from locals calling for a one-way traffic system to be introduced in Raleigh Street on the opposite side of the site, because they feared more residents would add to existing congestion problems in the area.

Walsall Council's development officers have recommended the development go ahead without the need for any changes to the road.

A planning report states: "Residents and councillors are speaking to the council's traffic Management team regarding local highway issues that residents are experiencing

"The Transport Assessment concludes that the development would not have a material impact on the existing highway infrastructure, and the council's highway authority has no objection to the current outline proposal.

"The district valuer has confirmed the proposal (one way system) is unviable and consequently, unable to fund additional off site works."

The scheme will be decided on Thursday.
