An appeal was last night launched by the RSPCA after vets confirmed the two deaths were due to the felines ingesting a poisonous substance.

The cats, who all lived in the Beechfield Road area, all died in March.

RSPCA inspector Mike Scargill, who is investigating, said: "We are concerned about what may be causing this - and urge anyone with any information at all to call us in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018.

"We cannot rule out that this was a deliberate act of cruelty and would ask anyone who has information to this effect to contact us immediately."
