One school even decided to go against the grain, opting for a production of Blood Brothers rather than sticking to a traditional nativity play.

St Benedict Biscop Primary in Wombourne is the winner, with these little stars topping the pile.

Helen George, headteacher, said: "It's a wonderful boost to the school and children just before we break up for Christmas.

The Express & Star carried a 12-page supplement of nativity pictures yesterday

"It was the first time we had run a combined Early Years and Key Stage 1 nativity, and with only two weeks to prepare the results were fantastic.

"We went very traditional this year to reinforce the real meaning of Christmas. The children really enjoyed learning the songs and performing together.

"We are so proud of our children and the staff who worked really hard to make it all happen."

The school has been awarded £100 prize money and pupils will also be taken on a tour of the Express & Star's offices on Queen Street, Wolverhampton.
