Heavy goods vehicles are set to be banned from more than 20 streets in Wolverhampton under new council plans to improve road safety.

Wolverhampton council is proposing to make an order preventing vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes from travelling on 23 roads in Wightwick, Tettenhall.

The move comes after a series of petitions were submitted demanding action over claims that drivers were putting pedestrians lives in danger by using roads in the area as a rat-run.

Roads affected by the plans include all of Boundary Way, Heath Hill Road, Elmsdale, End Hall Road, Quail Green and Wightwick Hall Road.

The restrictions will also be in place on Pattingham Road from its junction with Tinacre Hill to the borough boundary, Wightwick Bank from its junction with Bridgnorth Road to the Pattingham Road junction, and a section of Perton Road.

Wightwick Councillor Wendy Thompson said: "It's unfortunate that it has come to this but preventing heavy goods vehicles from entering these roads is the only way to try and ensure the safety of residents."

The order has been brought in under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Objections can be submitted to the council until October 23.
