Walsall asked to unite against EDL rally

A united front is being demanded in opposition to an English Defence League rally being planned in Walsall next month.

Members of the full council will be asked tonight(MON) to unite against the organisers of the demonstration.

Cross council condemnation is being sought against the rally which is scheduled to take place on August 15.

In a question to members, Councillor Ian Robertson, says: "The so-called English Defence League are threatening to return to Walsall next month.

"Will the leader of this council join with all members of this council in condemning this attempt by the EDL to bring their disgusting racist violence back to Walsall and confirm how we celebrate the unity in our community and will robustly defend Walsall's multicultural cooperation and community cohesion?"

A previous EDL rally held in Walsall town centre in 2012 erupted into violence with fireworks and planks of wood being thrown.

Several yobs involved in the trouble were hauled before the courts and sentenced for their part in the disruption.

Walsall South MP Valerie Vaz recently wrote to the Home Secretary. West Midlands Police and council chiefs to seek reassurances after the EDL announced their latest protest.
