Father-of-two Malcolm, aged 66, began his working life when he was 14 years old as a paperboy for his family who ran a newsagents in the area.

A few years later he and his brother Gordon, aged 76, acquired the grocery shop next door and in 1997 moved everything to the current site, now known as SPAR Compton.

Malcolm said: “I am retiring after 52 years of first working as a paperboy.

"I am not certain about what I am going to do in retirement and will just be taking things as they come.

“The last 12 months have been so busy because of Covid and because of the pandemic we just had to step up to the challenge as many other places were closed.”

His wife, Janet, aged 60, and his brother, Gordon, aged 76, have been helping out in the shop.

Malcolm said: “It will be a very sad day when I retire as we are in a nice area and we genuinely have really nice customers.”

Shopkeeper Giles Morrell will officially take over the store on Monday morning.
