Within two years of meeting, Ken and Jean Spence tied the knot at St Mary’s Church in Bushbury, Wolverhampton, on February 25, 1956.

They described one another as “golden” and said the secret to long marriage is “giving and taking”.

The couple, who live in Fallings Park, Wolverhampton, have received a card off Her Majesty The Queen and a signed picture off Wolves legend Steve Bull MBE.

Reflecting on their first meeting, Mrs Spence recalled: “He was doing a round for a milkman who was off sick for some reason.

The happy couple on their wedding day

"As I was going out to an office party, he was coming down the road with his cousin collecting the money.

"His cousin asked me if I would go out with him. I said ‘you will have to ask my mom and dad first’. Our first date was on February 19, 1954.”

Not long after, Mr Spence, 85, was called up to the army where he served for two years in the Royal Ordnance Corps. The couple got married in the year he came out.

Mrs Spence, 83, said: “If anybody ever tells you they don’t have arguments, they are telling you fibs. You don’t go to bed and let it brew. You have to give and take a lot.”

She added: “Ken is golden, he is kindness himself. He gives a lot to charity. Everybody who knows him becomes his friend.”

Mr Spence said: “She is absolutely golden. We have had our arguments like everybody else but you always sort it before going to bed.”

The couple had three daughters together and have five grandchildren and eight grandchildren.

"They worked together for many years as stewards and stewardesses at working men club’s in the city, including Springfield and Heath Town.

Mrs Spence counts her interests as reading and knitting while Mr Spence loves football and has been a Wolves fan since he was very little.
