Holding the golden Egg is Councillor Asha Mattu

Wolverhampton Councillor Asha Mattu and members of the Elias Mattu Foundation, set up in her late husband's name, also hope to distribute chocolate eggs to people on the food bank list.

They hope to collect as many as 1,500 eggs to ensure no-one misses out on the sweet treats at Easter time.

Councillor Mattu, 57, said: "Initially we had 40 families on the list of the food bank but now this has risen to 500.

"We deliver food parcels all over Wolverhampton and although we started with four or five drivers we now have 30 and have a wonderful team of helpers.

"Myself and a friend, Manjit Sidhu, started the foundation in memory of my late husband who was a councillor for Wolverhampton for 20 years and who passed away during his time of service as Mayor from 2018 to 2019.

"We feel there is a need to help people particularly during the pandemic. We realise there are people who are scared to go out shopping, elderly, isolated and shielding.

"We deliver food parcels to people with donated toiletries, food and treats for children and even formula, nappies, wipes and pet food from the food bank based at Owen Road.

"Delivery day is Saturday and we are usually at the food bank on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

"We are hoping people will donate Easter eggs to us a week before Easter Day because we do not want children to miss out on the treats."
