The grenade was fished out of a canal on Canal Wharf, Wednesfield Road, at about 2.30pm yesterday, but it turned out to not be live, police said.

Officers evacuated workers at takeaway Fat Daddies Smokeshack at about 3pm and told them it was due to a "suspect package".

Simon Parton, owner, said: "We're allowed to open for takeaways. We were just getting in service and the police stormed into the building saying you've got to evacuate immediately, a suspect package was found on the bridge.

"We came out and gave the police our details to call us when we could come back, then went home.

"We lost our whole service, the busiest night of the week, I came back at about 8pm and everybody had gone, but it was too late to reopen.

"The man thing is everyone was safe."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A grenade was fished out of a canal nearby at around 2.30pm, but it turned out not to be live."
