Arson arrest after fire at Wolverhampton petrol station shop

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a severe fire at a petrol station shop in the Black Country.

West Midlands Fire Service were called to the Esso garage shop, off Cannock Road, in Wolverhampton, shortly before 6am on Friday morning.

Crews from both Wolverhampton and Fallings Park fire stations attended the scene.

No one was in the property at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and remained in police custody on Friday afternoon.

The stretch of road was closed, while firefighters were at the scene.

Firefighters remained at the scene for the majority of the morning to check for any hot spots.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We've arrested a 48-year-old man after being called to a small fire in a kiosk at the Esso garage on Cannock Road, Springfield, Wolverhampton at around 6.30am on Friday.

"No one was reported to have suffered any serious injuries.

"The man, arrested on suspicion of arson, remains in police custody as enquiries continue."

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service added: "At 5.53am on Friday, January 8, West Midlands Fire Service's fire control received a call reporting a severe fire at a single-storey petrol station shop on Cannock Road, in Wolverhampton.

"One fire engine from Wolverhampton, and another from Fallings Park fire station and 10 firefighters attended the scene, with the first crew arriving in just under five minutes.

"Two breathing apparatus, one hose reel and one main jet were used to tackle the fire, thankfully no persons were at the property.

"The electrics at the property were then isolated with firefighters remaining at the scene for the rest of the morning to check for hot spots and carry out any damping down."
