Man dies in crash between van and car near Lichfield

A man has died following a crash between a van and a car near Lichfield.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Flats Lane and the A5 at Weeford, between Lichfield and Tamworth, at around 7.45pm on Monday.

The collision involved a Ford Focus car and a Mercedes sprinter van.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, a man, believed to be in his 60s, who was travelling in the car died at the scene.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 7:45pm to a report of a road traffic collision on the A5.

"The collision involved a white Mercedes sprinter van that collided with the rear of a silver Ford Focus that was stationary just around a mile and a half after the Weeford Interchange.

"Despite the efforts of emergency services, a man in his 60s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene with his family being offered support from specialist officers at this difficult time.

"An investigation is underway and officers are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information or relevant dash-cam footage is asked to call us."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "When crews arrived, they found an occupant of the car in a critical condition.

"Staff worked quickly to administer advanced trauma care to the patient, but sadly despite their best efforts nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

“A second patient was treated for minor injuries and discharged at the scene.”

Two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a critical care paramedic and doctor attended the scene.

Witnesses can call Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 686 of February 22.
