Smethwick road closed as part of factory roof collapses

A Black Country road has been closed after part of a factory roof collapsed into the road.

The top of a wall has collapsed on Cornwall Road, in Smethwick, at around 5.30am

Emergency services were called to Cornwall Road, in Smethwick, at around 5.30am this morning.

Council workers clear the fallen bricks

Approximately 20 metres of coping stones had fallen from the roof of the factory unit into the road.

Cornwall Road, at its junction with Downing Street and Rabone Lane, was closed as a result.

The wall collapsed early this morning

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We were called by West Midlands Police at 5.26am on Monday morning to Cornwall Road. One fire engine and five firefighters from Smethwick were at scene in five minutes.

"Approximately 20 metres of coping stones had fallen from roof of a factory unit into road. The road was subsequently closed from Downing Street to Rabone Lane.

"Firefighters carried out an inspection by ladder and a structure engineer attended from Birmingham City Council. Sandwell Council erected barriers and a safety cordon.

"We left the scene just before 8.30am and the incident was left with West Midlands Police."

The pavement was blocked

A West Midlands Police spokesman confirmed they were assisting with road closures at the scene.

Sandwell Council has been approached for comment.
