Only ruin and rubble remain in Formans Road, Sparkhill, after the blaze started at about 11pm on Thursday.

More than 120 firefighters tackled the fire which led to 40 homes being evacuated.

Most roads around the site have reopened, with just Pentros Drive still closed, West Midlands Fire Service said.

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted to say the cause is continuing, but crews were making "good progress" with damping down hotspots.

Firefighters were confronted with exploding canisters and forklift trucks ablaze during the night.

"At the height of the fire there were over 22 fire engines and over 100 firefighters dealing with this fire and specialist equipment," said Neil Griffiths from West Midlands Fire Service.

""We got to the scene in under four minutes. It enabled us to save a number of adjoining properties but more importantly we managed to save a number of houses as well.

"We evacuated approximately 40 houses and about 10 people have had to be rehoused, that tells you how significant the fire was and how lucky the people were and with our responding time, that made a really really big difference."

Paramedics were also called and treated two patients for minor injuries, though both were discharged at the scene.

West Midlands Fire Service added on Twitter on Friday afternoon: "We'd like to thank the crews, partners and agencies that have been involved with this incident, but especially those local residents that, when breaking their Ramadan fast in the early hours, shared their food with on site crews.

"Amazing community spirit and we're very grateful."
