89 more coronavirus deaths across Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further 89 coronavirus deaths have been confirmed across the region, as the UK death toll rose by 799.

Fifty care home deaths and 39 hospital deaths were announced in the Black Country, Staffordshire and Birmingham on Tuesday.

It means the total number of Covid-19 patients who have died in the region's hospitals now stands at 6,964, while the region's care home death toll is 1,289.

Weekly statistics released by the Officer for National Statistics confirmed another 50 Covid deaths in care homes in the region. The majority of these, but not all, were in the last seven days.

The latest figures showed 14 more deaths in Wolverhampton, taking the care home toll to 153, three more in Walsall, making a toll of 147, nine more in Dudley, making a new toll of 136 and five more in Sandwell taking the toll to 86.

Twelve more care home deaths were confirmed in Staffordshire, taking the county's toll to 463, and seven more were announced in Birmingham taking the toll to 304.

Meanwhile daily statistics from the NHS confirmed 39 more hospital deaths, with the bulk of these in Sandwell and Birmingham

Nine deaths were announced at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the death toll now stands at 1,043.

And 22 deaths were announced at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs hospitals in the city including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the toll now stands at 2,405.

Four deaths were recorded at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs the main hospitals in Stafford and Stoke, taking the toll to 1,300.

Two deaths were confirmed at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross Hospital, where the total deaths is now 741.

A further two deaths were reported at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the death toll stands at 667.

No new deaths were recorded at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the toll remains at 656.

Elsewhere, nine deaths were confirmed at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

The UK death toll announced by the Government, which only includes deaths within 28 days of a positive test, went up by 799 to 118,195.

Meanwhile, 13,575,245 coronavirus vaccinations have been carried out across England to date – including first and second doses.

In the Midlands, 2,514,581 first doses of the coronavirus vaccine has been administered, while 72,827 second doses have been carried out.

The data includes vaccinations carried out between December 8 and February 15.
