44 more Covid deaths in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further 44 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

The deaths announced on Monday mean a total of 6,283 patients have died in the in the region's hospitals.

A further 1,085 people have died in the region's care homes, official figures show.

Meanwhile the UK-wide death toll rose by 406 to 106,564 on Monday.

Of 356 hospital deaths announced by NHS England, 83 were in the Midlands - the highest amount of any region in the country.

A total of 15 deaths were reported at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the total increased to 586.

Seven deaths were announced at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs the main hospitals in Stoke and Stafford, where there has now been 1,202 deaths.

Six deaths were recorded at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross Hospital, where the death toll is 673.

A further six deaths were confirmed at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the death toll now stands at 935.

Two deaths were reported at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where there have been 586 deaths since the pandemic began.

While one death was announced at the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where the total is now 66.

And seven deaths were recorded at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the overall death toll increased to 2,158.
