Police issue more than 1,000 Covid fines in Staffordshire

More than 1,000 fixed penalty notices have been handed out in Staffordshire to people flouting Covid-19 rules, police chiefs have said.

Staffordshire Police revealed the figure as they urged people to follow the rules amid reports of gatherings and house parties in the county.

It comes as Home Secretary Priti Patel announced an increase in the fine for anyone attending a house party of 15 or more people to £800.

Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe, head of partnerships, said: "This is a critical period for the country as doctors and nurses are under increasing pressure.

"There is a new more infectious strain of the virus and those who feel they are not at risk should consider how they would feel if they spread the infection to their friends or family.”
