Further 66 coronavirus deaths at hospitals across Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further 66 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals across the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

It means a total of 5,663 patients have now died in the region's hospitals after contracting the virus.

A further 1,005 have died in the region's care homes after testing positive for coronavirus.

NHS England announced a further 993 deaths on Friday, taking the death toll in the country's hospitals to 65,104.

Seventeen deaths were announced at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, where the total stands at 596.

Twelve deaths were confirmed at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where 820 people have now died.

A further nine deaths were recorded at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital, taking the coronavirus death toll there to 1,114.

Seven deaths were announced at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the total is 513.

Four deaths were confirmed at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the death toll increased to 516.

While one death was recorded at the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where the total is now 58.

And 16 deaths were announced at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs across Birmingham including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, meaning the total now stands at 1,975.

Elsewhere, a further 11 deaths were confirmed at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 993 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 65,104.

"Patients were aged between 23 and 102 years old. All except 47 – aged 32 to 96 years old – had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from December 12 to January 21.

"Their families have been informed."
