Coronavirus: 35 more deaths at hospitals in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further 35 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

The deaths announced on Sunday mean a total of 4,661 people have now died in the region's hospitals after contracting the virus.

It comes as 900 people have died in the region's care homes after catching the disease.

Across England, a further 386 people who tested positive for Covid died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 51,437.

A spokesman for the NHS said: "Patients were aged between 30 and 107 years old. All except 18, aged 59 to 95-years-old, had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from December 6 to January 2 with the majority being on or after December 29. Their families have been informed."

Eight deaths were recorded at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the total stands at 435.

Five further patients died at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, where the total stands at 450.

Two deaths were reported at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where 663 people have died.

Three more deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital, taking the coronavirus death toll there to 892.

Meanwhile, 17 new deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs hospitals across Birmingham including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, meaning the toll now stands at 1,656.

No new deaths were recorded at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, where the death toll remains at 448.
