Temperatures are set to dip below freezing in parts of the region this week, particularly during the late nights and early mornings, where people will experience temperatures of -1C and -2C, but snow is not forecast to fall throughout the week going into Saturday.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the UK yesterday, namely the East Midlands, North England and Scotland, warning that travel may become tricky due to ice and snow.

The previous day, on Saturday, yellow weather warnings were in place for parts of the West Midlands and Staffordshire. Snow fell in parts of the Black Country, making driving conditions difficult.

It has prompted the RAC to warn motorists about travelling safety in tough driving conditions.

RAC breakdown spokesman Simon Williams said: "The message for those who have to drive is to adjust their speed according to the conditions and leave extra stopping distance so 2021 doesn't begin with an unwelcome bump and an insurance claim.

"Snow and ice are by far the toughest driving conditions, so if they can be avoided that's probably the best policy."

Police in the West Midlands say there have already been a number of crashes due to difficult driving conditions.

Central Motorway Police Group, which patrols the region's highway network, tweeted: "If you need to make an essential journey please allow extra time and drive to the conditions."
