The blue VW Polo was heading northbound on Stafford Road near the Oxley Moor Road junction when the engine cut out and the engine caught fire.

The driver managed to escape uninjured before a fire crew from Falling Park arrived at the scene. The northbound carriageway was closed to traffic for almost an hour.

Watch Commander Gurpreet Gill said: "The gentleman whose car it was said that the engine cut out as he was driving along and then just burst into flames.

"He got out in time and no-one was injured.

"We were called at about 11.30am and sent one crew. We were there for about 15 or 20 minutes.

"The police came to redirect traffic. The car was removed shortly after."
