The vehicle was 'embedded' in the bridge following the smash on Bloxwich Road, which happened at around 9.40am.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Gina Lycett said: "We were called to a report that a lorry had hit a railway bridge and had become embedded.

"The roads are currently closed at Bloxwich Road junction of Hospital Street and Broadstone Avenue while recovery is arranged and an engineer has been called to assess the damage."

National Express West Midlands said bus services in the area had been disrupted due to the damage.

Services 301 and 302 were diverted in both directions via Stafford Street, Proffitt Street, Harden Road, Broadstone Avenue and Bloxwich Road.

Police hope the road will be reopened by 4pm.
