Bilston flat fire: Man rescued after blaze sparked by cigarette

A man had to be rescued after flames tore through a flat in Bilston sparked by a discarded cigarette.

The fire destroyed furniture inside the flat in the Priestfield area after the fire in the early hours today.

Neighbours told how firefighters smashed through a window to rescue the man out before paramedics were able to treat him.

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted pictures showing the level of damage left in the wake of the blaze.

The man had to be taken to hospital suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

Fire crews were called the flat at a three-storey block, in George Street, at around 3.50am.

At its height 15 firefighters worked to tackle the fire which took over a hour to quell.

Crews from Bilston, Wolverhampton and Fallings Park stations worked at the scene.

West Midlands Fire Service station commander Andy Smith tweeted that closed doors along with the arrival of crews at the scene within three minutes halted the spread for the flames.
