An air ambulance landed on the car park of the West Brom ground after the accident, which happened at around 7.27am.

The woman, aged 46, suffered fractures to both legs, a pelvic injury and a minor head injury.

She was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Sandwell's response policing team described the crash as serious and urged drivers to avoid the area while the road was shut in both directions.

West Midlands Police spokesman Craig Hughes said: "A Vauxhall Agila was involved in a collision with a pedestrian and the road is closed between Halfords Lane and Middlemore Road."

The road was opened again at around 10.15am.

"The driver is helping officers with inquiries and witnesses should call police on on 101."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith added: "Crews arrived to find a woman lying in the road and a car that had suffered significant damage in the collision."

He said the driver of the car, a woman, was uninjured.
