The rider hit the central reservation with emergency service forced to close the motorway in both directions, causing major delays on surrounding roads.

The accident happened at around 3.35pm between junctions two for Oldbury and three for Halesowen.

Four members of St John's Ambulance who had been on a driver training course came across the smash and stopped to help.

Both carriageways were closed to allow emergency services to safely work to treat the injured rider.

The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 50s, suffered 'serious multiple injuries' according to West Midlands Ambulance Service.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "Given his position and level of injuries crews had to use extreme caution to safely extricate him."

He was taken to the major trauma centre at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further treatment.
