Police said the man, 72, was 'slightly confused' about motorway regulations, and had to close a slip road while they took him and the scooter to safety.

The drama unfolded at around 2am this morning on one of the region's busiest roads, which has a 50mph speed limit.

Central Motorway Police Group tweeted an image of an officer riding the vehicle to safety, with the Expressway in the background.

Twitter users expressed dismay at the episode. One asked if the vehicle was 'taxed and insured'

Another added: "These things are dangerous. Are they meant to be used on the pavement or the road?"

But officers appeared to see the funny side, as they made an offer to social media users:

West Midlands Police said: "Officers were called to the A38 exit slip road near Dartmouth Circus following reports of a man riding his mobility scooter in the early hours of this morning (8 April).

"The slip road was closed for a short time while officers assisted in getting the man to hospital for a check-up following some health concerns."
