Bomb disposal team called to Burntwood building site

Bomb disposal experts were investigating a suspicious unexploded device at a building site in Burntwood this afternoon.

A team from the Ministry of Defence were called to the A5190 Milestone Way after police received reports of what is believed to have been an unexploded grenade.

A new housing development is under construction at the site near Burntwood Morrisons.

Milestone Way was closed between Cannel Road and High Street from around 2pm, but reopened at around 5.30pm once the disposal team had made the area safe.

It is believed the team carried out a controlled explosion of the grenade.

Staffordshire Police said: "We received a call just before 2pm this afternoon reporting a suspicious item found on a construction site in Chasetown.

"The Ministry of Defence have been contacted and have confirmed they believe the item to be a grenade."

"Road closures have been put in place in the surrounding areas of Burntwood and Chasetown until the situation has been dealt with."

Police advised the public to avoid the area as the road closures caused delays.
