Elderly woman 'very seriously injured' in van crash

An elderly woman has suffered what have been described as 'very serious' injuries after being hit by a van.

The incident - which was attended by the Air Ambulance - happened at around 10.40am this morning close to the junction of Silvercroft Avenue and Friary Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham.

Murray MacGregor, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "On arrival, crews found an elderly lady who had suffered very serious injuries.

"She was anaesthetised on scene and then taken by land ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where medics were awaiting her arrival.

"The man driving the van was uninjured but shaken by the incident."
