Three injured in Hagley Road smash

Three men have been injured in a serious smash on a major road into Birmingham.

The crash, between a car and a people carrier, happened on the busy Hagley Road at around midnight last night and left the driver of the car seriously injured.

He was rushed to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, while two people travelling in the people carrier were also taken to hospital with minor injuries

Both vehicles were left with major damage as a result of the accident, which happened at the junction of Hagley Road and Meadow Road.

Massive damage could be seen on the driver's side of the silver estate car.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "When ambulance staff arrived they found a car that had suffered massive damage to the driver's side. A people carrier had significant front end damage.

"Ambulance staff treated a man in the car. He had suffered a number of serious injuries. After being assessed and treated at the scene, he was taken to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"Two men from the people carrier were taken to Sandwell Hospital. One had shoulder and arm injuries, the other had rib pain.

"The road was shut in both directions for about 30 minutes while emergency services worked at the scene."
