Cyclist dies after hit-and-run on A449 in Wolverhampton

A cyclist has died after a hit-and-run on Wolverhampton's Stafford Road.

His bike was in collision with a car near to the Five Ways island yesterday afternoon before the driver left the scene.

The air ambulance, police and paramedics were called to the crash, which happened outside the Texaco garage, at 12.40pm.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police took to Twitter to release details of the "X" registered car involved in the crash

Stafford Road was closed in both directions from Five Ways island to the McDonald's island whilst emergency crews worked at the scene.

It has now reopened.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "A man had come off his bicycle after a reported collision with a car.

"The man had suffered serious injuries and was in cardiac arrest. Ambulance crews immediately commenced CPR on the man but sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and the doctor confirmed death on scene."

Sgt Tim Rogers said: "A man has lost his life in this collision and we need to find the driver of the car in order to fully establish exactly what happened.

"I would appeal to witnesses who have not yet spoken to us to give us a call as soon as possible. I also want to appeal directly to the driver to come forward."
