The 79-year-old was found on the floor of his living room in Edison Road in the Leamore area yesterday. Fire chiefs say he was already dead when they arrived.

His death is not believed to be connected to a small blaze caused by an electric fire in the room. Crews were called to the bungalow at 10.20am by a member of the public who reported that the householder was lying on the floor with an electric fire on top of him.

Debbie Whittingham, spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service, said: "We received a call from someone in a panic, repeating, 'There's a fire on top of him'.

"When we arrived, the gentleman was already deceased. It looked like the fire had fallen on top of him. The fire had burned the carpet but not him. There were no flames. Our crews did not have to carry out any fire-fighting duties."

West Midlands Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious.
