The former striker, who won the League Cup twice with Wolves, called for nominations for the awards, which recognise the efforts of young people who have gone that extra mile to help others.

In a video to promote the awards, Richards said: "These awards celebrate and recognise all the voluntary work that young people do. No act of kindness, however small, should go unrecognised.

"Just a nomination alone is a powerful way to say thank you."

Richards, who is now chairman of the Wolves Former Players Association, joins current players Leander Dendoncker and Theo Corbeanu in backing the awards, which are now in their seventh year.

TV presenter Jay Blades and singer Beverley Knight are among other supporters.

Nominations are sought in two categories, 13 to18 and 19 to 25.

The awards were devised and are sponsored by the city's five Rotary Clubs. They are organised in partnership with the city council, the Express and Star and Wolves Foundation, and supported by Carvers Building Supplies and the James Beattie Trust.
