Birmingham City University (BCU) has announced a series of measures “to keep everyone safe”, including cutting numbers on its sites by at least half, at it prepares to welcome 26,000 students.

Vice-chancellor Professor Philip Plowden said the new term would be “like no other we have experienced”.

He added the changes and introduction of one-way systems and mandatory wearing of face coverings on campus, would make the return to lectures “as safe as possible”.

The measures mean most students will be on campus every other week, alternating with a week of online classes and study.
