Syed Ali, aged 22, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to just over seven years at Birmingham Crown Court.

Ali and his wife were working at a warehouse in Tamworth alongside the 23-year-old man who was stabbed.

Tensions were rising in the weeks leading up to the attack which happened in Trinity Road, Aston, during the early hours of 25 September last year, West Midlands Police said,

Ali had confronted the man on several occasions and a series of heated exchanges took place over the phone.

The pair arranged to meet to discuss things and Ali smashed the window of the car the other man had arrived in. Shortly after, they met again on Trinity Road and a fight broke out.

Witnesses described seeing Ali with a knife and moments later the man collapsed after being stabbed in the heart.

The victim survived after having surgery to repair the damage caused to his hearts.

Ali fled the scene and went to change his clothing, however was soon arrested in the area on suspicion of attempted murder.

On Wednesday, Ali of Bevington Road, Aston, was sentenced to seven years and two months at Birmingham Crown Court.

Det Con Ed Ketterer, from West Midlands Police, said: “This was a sickening act of violence on our streets which was completely unacceptable.

“Sadly we see the effects of knife crime far too often; the devastation that it causes so many people is truly heart-breaking.

“Ali had a knife and the consequences were nearly fatal. The man is lucky to be alive after being stabbed in the heart.

“My thoughts are with him as he tries to rebuild his life after this terrifying ordeal."
