The 15-year-old boy – who had links to a city gang – knifed his victim in Tudor Road, in the Heath Town area, at 3.15pm on November 27 last year.

The youth fled as the injured 16-year-old was taken to hospital with a chest wound. Fortunately, the boy's injuries were not life-threatening.

West Midlands Police officers were quickly able to identify the suspect and he was arrested less than 24 hours later, and charged with wounding and possession of an offensive weapon.

The boy – who cannot be named due to his age – admitted the offences and was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday to three years and five months at a young offenders institution.

Detective Sergeant Craig Newey , from force CID, said: "There is no place for such violence. There was no clear motive for this attack and it’s just fortunate the victim didn’t suffer life-threatening injuries.

"We know the 15-year-old had links to a city gang, and having the wrong influences can lead to decisions you will regret forever.

"This boy has a criminal record and has now rightly lost his freedom."
