Keon died of gunshot and stab wounds after being set upon by a group of youths on Linwood Road, Handsworth, on January 21.

Two youths accused of his murder - a 14-year-old from Birmingham and a 15-year-old from Walsall - who cannot be named because of a court order, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday by video link from separate secure youth detention facilities in the West and East Midlands.

The Birmingham teenager is also charged with possession of a firearm and the Walsall youth is charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Appearing before Judge Paul Farrer QC for a 10-minute hearing, both boys were told to reappear in court next month to enter pleas to the charges.

The judge told the pair: “Your case will next be before the court on March 5th, when the court will hear further directions towards the case becoming ready for trial.

“I have fixed a trial date for the 5th of October this year, that being the earliest date when a suitable judge will be available to try this case.

“In the meantime, you are both remanded in custody to youth detention accommodation.”
