Police say it is unclear if the man was stabbed on the approach to the tram stop platform or elsewhere.

Officers were called to the Benson Road stop, in Winson Green, Birmingham, at around 4.50pm on Friday.

The man, thought to be aged in his 50s, was found collapsed at the tram stop having suffered serious stab wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

DCI Tony Fitzpatrick, of British Transport Police, is leading the investigation in conjunction with officers from West Midlands Police.

He said: "We're still trying to establish exactly how the man came to receive his injuries.

"At the moment, it is unclear whether the man was stabbed on the platform approach or sustained his injuries elsewhere.

"The incident occurred around rush hour and I'm certain they would have been people around who can help us find out exactly what happened.

"If you saw anything suspicious around the area, which is near the junction with Talbot Street, please contact us as a matter of urgency."

Trams will not be calling at Benson Road stop until further notice on Saturday.
