The 34-year-old was arrested on Wednesday from an address in the city on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He was last night being questioned by West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at a police station in the region.

Officers said the arrest was pre-planned and intelligence-led, adding there was no threat to the public's safety and that a property in Birmingham was being searched.

The man was arrested under terrorism legislation, meaning officers have an initial 48 hours to question the suspect before charging, releasing or applying for a warrant of further detention.

Under normal circumstances, police must charge a suspect within 24 hours or apply for a further period of detention.
