Gareth Rowton, aged 35, is serving a sentence of 11-and-a-half years for the wounding with intent of David Stanton.

Staffordshire Police said the men were involved in an altercation in an alleyway outside their home on Old Fallow Road, Cannock, on November 9 2012.

Rowton pleaded guilty at court, and Mr Stanton, who remained in care after his hospital treatment, died on June 29 last year.

The cause of death was 'delayed complications of a severe brain injury', Staffordshire Police said.

Staffordshire Police said: "Detectives were authorised to charge Rowton with murder by the Crown Prosecution Service, on behalf of the Attorney General, and he was charged last Wednesday .

"He will appear before magistrates at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on November 10."

"Our thoughts are with David's family at this difficult time."
