Two men were arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday after the 23-year-old man was stabbed to death in Whitmore Reans.

The older of the two suspects, who are aged 33 and 36, has now been released on bail, while the younger man continues to be quizzed by police.

The pair were detained at different locations in Whitmore Reans at 12pm and 10pm on Saturday after the victim died at 8am.

Neighbours living on Carter Road, where the victim was found with multiple stab wounds, have reacted to the attack with shock.

Robert Davies, who has lived in Carter Road for 50 years, said the street had gone 'downhill' in recent times.

The 60-year-old Wolverhampton council worker said: "We've seen a difference in the past few years. Over time it has gone downhill here.

"Most people keep themselves to themselves. There were problems with drugs across the way but the police got on to that and sorted it.

"Obviously this is a bit of a shock with it being so close."

Another neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I can't really believe someone has been killed just down the road.

"I didn't hear anything at all but woke up to see the police were outside."

Emergency services were called to Carter Road at around 7am on Saturday.

Police said the victim, who has yet to be formally identified, was found in the street having suffered multiple stab wounds.

Despite the efforts of medical crews the 23-year-old was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after 8am.

Officers cordoned off Carter Road for a forensic examination of the scene to take place, while a police tent remained at the scene yesterday.

The forensic tent was erected to the rear of flats on Gorsebrook Road, which back on to Carter Road. A post mortem was due to take place yesterday.

Officers have urged anyone who was in the area at the time and thinks they may have seen anything which could assist police to call 101.

Detective Inspector Jim Munro, from West Midlands Police CID, said: "We believe this assault was targeted and I would like to reassure the community that there is no risk to the wider public.

"Finding the killer is the absolute priority for me and my team right now and there is lots of work going on behind the scenes to get that person in custody as quickly as possible."
