Despite the efforts of medical crews the man, who is in his 30s, was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after 8am.

Officers have cordoned off Carter Road for a forensic examination of the scene to take place.

A police spokesman said no arrests have been made, but officers are following up several lines of enquiry and 'working at pace to close-in on the person thought to be responsible'.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and thinks they may have seen anything which could assist police is asked to call 101 as soon as possible.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw a grey Audi A3 speeding away from the scene soon after the stabbing.

Detective Inspector Jim Munro, from West Midlands Police CID, said: "We believe this assault was targeted and I would like to reassure the community that there is no risk to the wider public.

"Finding the killer is the absolute priority for me and my team right now and there is lots of work going on behind the scenes to get that person in custody as quickly as possible."
