Timeline: How the Walsall terror network unfolded

From a trip to Kenya in 2011 to the Old Bailey in 2016, via the Holiday Inn on Wolverhampton Road West: how the Walsall terror network unfolded.

2011

  • FEBRUARY 28: Sajid Aslam, Jacob Petty, and Omar Siadatan go to Kenya. Petty and Siadatan are arrested and deported to the UK.

2012

  • Islam Walsall is founded with a constitution and six committee members, including Ayman Shaukat as treasurer.

2013

  • DECEMBER 25: Islam Walsall host a conference with hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza and 7/7 preacher Abdullah el-Faisal at the Holiday Inn, Wolverhampton Road West, Walsall.

2014

  • JUNE 29: ISIS declare a ‘Caliphate’ and establish the so-called Islamic State in parts of Syria and Iraq.

  • JULY 8: Petty travels from Birmingham Airport to Athens, Greece.

  • AUGUST 9: Petty arrives in Istanbul, Turkey via Cairo, Egypt.

  • AUGUST 10: Isaiah Siadatan flies from Birmingham to Cologne, Germany.

  • AUGUST 20: Petty arrives in Gaziantep on the Turkish/Syrian border.

  • AUGUST 21: Siadatan arrives in Gaziantep.

  • AUGUST 23: Aslam flies from Stansted Airport to Istanbul.

  • AUGUST 24: Aslam arrives in Gaziantep.

  • OCTOBER 26: Petty sends an email to his mother telling her he has joined ISIS in Syria and is training as a soldier.

  • NOVEMBER 3: Lorna Moore books flights for her and her three children from Stansted to Palma on the Spanish island of Majorca, for November 15.

  • NOVEMBER 4 Alex Nash and Yousma Jan, who was pregnant, fly to Istanbul. Jan sends Moore a message saying ‘see you there xx’.

  • NOVEMBER 6: Shaukat clears out Nash and Jan’s home.

  • NOVEMBER 7: Nash and Jan are detained by Turkish authorities in Gaziantep.

  • NOVEMBER 11: Properties of Shaukat, Moore, and Kerry Thomason are searched.

  • NOVEMBER 15 Moore and her children do not fly to Palma – citing the emotional blow of the house search.

  • NOVEMBER 17: Thomason, who is pregnant, books flights to Turkey with her children for later that day to join Siadatan. Police seize her passport and the children are taken into care.

  • NOVEMBER 25: Nash and Jan are deported to the UK and are arrested.

  • NOVEMBER 28: Prominent Islam Walsall member and his pregnant wife are stopped from travelling at the port of Dover by coach intended for Bulgaria. On the same coach is Abul Hasan who successfully makes it to Syria.

  • NOVEMBER 29: The same pair attempt to travel again and are arrested.

  • DECEMBER 1: Musadikur Rohaman and his wife Zohura Siddeka fly from Birmingham Airport to Istanbul, driven by Mohammed Atiqur Rahman Khan. They cross into Syria.

  • DECEMBER 8: Musadikur and Siddeka fail to board a return flight to Birmingham.

  • DECEMBER 14: Siadatan threatens to kill Thomason if she does not bring his children to the ‘Islamic State’.

2015

  • JANUARY 30: Musadikur tells family in WhatsApp message he is not coming back from Syria.

  • FEBRUARY: Jacob Petty is killed fighting for ISIS in Syria.

  • FEBRUARY 11: Thomason and Moore are arrested.

  • FEBRUARY 16: Counter Terrorism officers investigate whereabouts of Musadikur and Siddeka.

  • MARCH 24: Mohamed Suyaubur Rohaman transfers £5,000 to accounts in the Lebanon via Western Union.

  • MARCH 26: Rohaman sends a further £5,000.

  • APRIL 3: Khan applies for credit card in Musadikur’s name.

  • April 24: Maruf Uddin tries to sell Musadikur’s wedding watch on eBay for the first time.

  • JUNE 9: Shaukat arrested and Nash and Jan re-arrested and homes searched.

  • JUNE 9: Police search Castle Road home of Musadikur, Siddeka, Hussain, and Rohaman Nash and Thomason plead guilty to terror-related offences. No evidence is offered against Jan and the charges dropped.

  • JULY: Abul Hasan is killed in a US air strike in Raqqa.

2016

  • JANUARY 12: Hussain and Rohaman are arrested.

  • JANUARY 14: Khan and Uddin are arrested.

  • FEBRUARY 24: Shaukat and Moore found guilty by jury at the Old Bailey.

  • MAY 23: Shaukat jailed for 10 years, Nash jailed for five years, Moore jailed for two-and-a-half years, and Thomason got a two-year suspended prison sentence.

  • AUGUST 5: Hussain, Rohaman, and Khan found guilty by jury at the Old Bailey. Uddin is cleared.
