The victim, from Willenhall and also aged 30, was left with a bleed on the brain after he was punched to the floor in the Leicester Street bar on Thursday.

He had gone to the pub with friends to watch England's 2-1 Euro 2016 afternoon victory over Wales but was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being attacked at around 9.30pm.

He remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

This morning a 30-year-old man from Walsall handed himself in to police and was arrested on suspicion of assault.

Officers had earlier released CCTV images of a suspect they wanted to trace in relation to the attack, while Yates's was back open on Friday afternoon after being shut overnight for forensic examinations.

Speaking after launching the CCTV appeal, Det Insp Greg Evans said: "The victim had been watching the match with friends.

"There were a few people left in the pub after the game and there was a disagreement within, the offender punched the victim and then walked out. The victim was taken straight to the Queen Elizabeth hospital."

Det Insp Evans said it was not clear what triggered the attack, but there was no reason to suggest the attack was related to the football match.
