Mohammed Yasin was at the wheel of a 12-year-old Jaguar X-type when a marked police patrol saw it turn left through a red traffic light at Beverley Road, West Bromwich, at around midnight on February 4.

Officers turned on their siren and blue lights but the 22 year old ignored the order to stop and accelerated away into the distance, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told. It quickly reached 70 mph in a 30 limit after hurtling along Hall Green Road, said Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting.

The black Jaguar, that belonged to a friend, careered the wrong way around a series of traffic islands as Yasin unsuccessfully tried to lose the pursuing patrol.

Two more police cars joined the chase as he ignored keep-left bollards and sped over speed bumps at more than 40mph while weaving his way through a string of residential roads in a circular tour of Stone Cross.

It was stopped when officers put a stinger across Hydes Road which punctured the tyres of the Jaguar. Yasin was then arrested.

Mr Darron Whitehead, defending, told the court: "He was out with friends and had left his home area because he wanted to have a smoke. He lives with his parents.

"But all is not lost with this young man. The defendant now realises that behaving like this in the middle of the night comes with real risks and is determined to change."

Yasin, from Pretoria Road, Bordesley Green, whose previous convictions included dangerous driving, vehicle taking and drug driving, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

He was sent to prison by Judge Kristina Montgomery QC who told him: "The danger you posed was significant and sustained. You showed a complete disregard for the safety of other road users." Unemployed Yasin was also banned from driving for a further three years three months.
