Birmingham Wholesale Market fire: Man charged with arson months after huge blaze

A man has been charged with arson after a huge fire broke out at Birmingham's wholesale market in August last year.

Stephen Wilkinson, aged 59, from Mickleton Close, Oakenshaw, Redditch, is accused of arson with reckless intent to endanger life.

He was appearing before Birmingham magistrates today.

Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles around as the blaze took hold on the afternoon of August 6.

Forty firefighters spent nearly two hours control the blaze, which left parts of the market closed for several days and destroyed stock.
