Murder arrest as teenager dies in Worcestershire to Birmingham canal

A teenager who was rescued from a Midland canal has died prompting police to launch a murder investigation.

Sean Stevens, aged 17, from Worcester, was pulled from the water at the Worcestershire to Birmingham canal on Thursday night.

The incident happened in the Bilford Road area of Worcester with emergency service called at around 8.50pm.

He was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by ambulance with died at around 11.15pm. His next of kin have been informed.

A 17 year-old male, from Worcester, has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remains in police custody at this time.

Superintendent Kevin Purcell, from West Mercia Police, said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with Sean's family, who have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

"A full and thorough investigation is being conducted into this incident and we are working to establish how Sean came to be in the canal.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact police.

"We are particularly interested in talking to anyone who saw a group of teenagers, or young adults, in and around the canal path from Worcester city centre up to Perdiswell last night, from 7pm onwards."
