Man in court charged with murder of pensioner whose body lay undiscovered for a month

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a pensioner from West Bromwich whose body lay undiscovered for a month.

Paul Cooke, aged 35, appeared via videolink at Sandwell Magistrates Court in connection with the death of Ronald Smith, 65, who was found dead at his home in Cottage Walk on June 2 last year.

Police had been called to the address amid concerns for his welfare. A post mortem showed Mr Smith died from stab wounds. He is believed to have died on May 6.

Cooke, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during the short hearing and is due to appear next at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday.
