Detective Inspector Ian Iliffe, said at the time, that Mr Smith 'kept himself to himself' but he was known as a keen fisherman and was often spotted fishing on the local canal.

He said: "Ronald is known to have led a law-abiding life, he was a frequent visitor to West Bromwich centre and in particular we know he liked to visit some of the betting shops in the area.

"We also know that occasionally he visited local temples for meals as part of their community outreach work."

A 60-year-old man, also arrested in connection with the death, has been told he will face no further action.
