Mr Ahmed, aged 60, was found collapsed after the assault in Bell Street South, Brierley Hill, around 9.30pm on Sunday night.

Dudley Private Hire and Taxi Association chairman Shaz Saleem, who tweeted the image of Mr Ahmed tonight, said the support had been overwhelming.

He said: "He is understandably shaken up and cannot remember the attack whatsoever, but he said he feels overwhelmed by the messages of support he has received since the attack.

"He is up and talking, but still has no balance. Unfortunately at this stage he is suffering from memory loss and cannot remember certain parts of his life.

"But he wanted everyone to know he has been humbled by the community spirit and would like to express his thanks."

Mr Saleem was joined by other taxi drivers across the Black Country in paying a visit to Mr Ahmed.

Investigations are continuing into the attack and anyone with information should call West Midlands Police force CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
