The 86-year-old victim, who lives alone in a cul-de-sac in Fallings Park, opened her door to the man, believing it to be one of her carers yesterday morning.

He claimed to have done work around the pensioner's home, including painting a fence and collecting rubbish, and asked her to hand over £130.

But the woman refused to give him the cash.

The man left the home empty-handed. The woman was left unharmed but shaken.

The culprit had a stocky build and is thought to be aged in his 30s or 40s. He drove away from the scene in a white car.

A neighbour, said: "By the sounds of it this could have turned out really nasty.

"I was really shocked when the police came and told me about what had happened."
